Questions regarding LEAVE A LEGACY™ Iowa

What are the mission and goals?
The mission of LEAVE A LEGACY™ Iowa is to preserve and improve the quality of life in our communities sustained by the people, programs and services of charitable nonprofit organizations. The goal of LEAVE A LEGACY™ Iowa is to increase the number and amount of charitable estate gifts that benefit charitable nonprofit organizations.

When was it started and who’s behind it?
Headquartered in Des Moines, LEAVE A LEGACY™ Iowa officially launched in November 2000. The National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG) is the professional association who is responsible for adopting the LEAVE A LEGACY™ program, which began in Columbus, Ohio to “promote the dissemination of information about planned gifts through local councils.” The NCPG promotes LEAVE A LEGACY™ by providing start-up and support materials and by training volunteers of local LAL programs through local planned giving councils. The NCPG is careful not to impose a national “agenda” on local programs, but rather to support and encourage local activities. Currently, there are four existing and two emerging NCPG chapters in the state of Iowa:
      Des MoinesMid-Iowa Planned Giving Council
      DubuqueTri-State Gift Planning Council
      SpencerIowa Planned Giving Council, Northwest
      DavenportQuad City Planned Giving Council
      Waterloo/Cedar FallsOrganizing
Cedar Rapids/Iowa CityEastern Iowa Planned Giving Council

The NCPG Iowa chapters were established to foster continuing education, professional development, and the creative exchange of ideas among charitable gift planners. This group of gift planners is comprised of a dynamic and diverse group of planned giving professionals from academic, religious, health, arts, and human service organizations as well as professional advisors such as attorneys, accountants, insurance agents, trust officers, and estate and financial planners.

The primary objectives of the Iowa chapters are to:
 •   Advance the educational and professional expertise of members
 •   Create an avenue for communication among planned giving practitioners
 •   Serve as a clearinghouse for information of interest to members, create and further an awareness of governmental and legislative issues
 •   Provide a forum for members to discuss specific planned giving cases
